Pass The Fish, Hold The Broom.

by

Can you hear it?

No not the sound of the birds chirping, or the sound of one of Shaq’s missed free throws bouncing off the side of the rim. I’m referring to that LOUD sound created by lightning.

Thunder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have SWEPT the Dallas Mavericks in the first round series of the NBA Playoffs.  Anybody who knows me knows I love to trash talk during playoff season.  So quote me, but don’t poke me. Get it? Like Facebook.  Ok never mind.

Thunder down 13 going into the 4th quarter.  Dallas fans excited.  Little did they know that the wizard that lives in James Harden’s beard was teaming up with a cloud over Dallas and creating yet another thunderstorm.  Kevin Durant hit a 3 pointer to tie the game at 88, and then BOOM. The end.

I’m kidding………

Sort of…..

I love the word “component.” Why? Because it is something that many NBA teams lack. Components. Multiple players who will step up and get the job done at any given time. I must say that was the main reason as to why I was very happy for the Mavericks when they won last year.  They deserved it- EVERYONE on the team contributed.  But they’re on the dark side now.  In fact they might want to start investing in broom companies…

Harden decided to tell the Wizard to come out and play, then what happens? He scores 15 points in the 4th and played a major role in the reason as to why OKC is now advancing to the semifinals!

If you haven’t read any of my previous posts please be advised that I AM a Knicks fan, and I am aware of their current status on the almost flying a magic broom front.  BUT I am a Thunder fan and a Bulls fan as well.  Like I said before, if you don’t like it, call David Stern.  Why David Stern? Because he won’t care.

So I advise any late bandwagon needing fans to grab your raincoat and prepare for another crazy forecast.

The Semifinals are next.

They’ve already got rings

by

They’ve already got rings.
For my first blog interview I thought I’d start off with some winners. 2012 Super Bowl Champions that is. Dave Diehl and Terrell Thomas of the NY Giants!

Dave Diehl @Davediehl66
So Dave, what’s your favorite basketball team?
“Hands down the New York Knicks”

Favorite player of all time?
“My favorite player of all time is Charles Barkley. I was big just like Charles growing up so I could always relate to him.”

Favorite Knicks player?
“I can’t just choose one, I love the whole team”

Do you find time to watch games while you’re on the road during the season?
“Absolutely, even though you’re a professional athlete you never lose the aspect that you were a fan at one point.”

If you could be Charles Barkley for a day, what would you do?
“I don’t know that’s a good question, I would love to sit on set as Charles Barkley one day and say this is turrible!! Just Turrible. He hasn’t changed who he is because of the game and I respect that. Everybody should be like that, the same person you were before the attention no matter what.”

Thoughts on this shortened season?
“We came off of a lockout and we won the Super Bowl, didn’t affect anything at all with us. Nobody wants to have a lockout, business interferes with the game itself. I couldn’t imagine what it’d be like without football, without basketball, think about all of the people who were directly affected. It’s not about the players it’s about everybody who thrives off of the field. All the stadium workers, hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. They’re the ones who suffer more than us, we have to think about them so I’m glad the lockouts ended.”

Who wins it all?
“Ah, I’m hoping for my Knicks to pull it off. People can count ‘em out but it’s just like with us, there’s no telling what can happen when you come together as a team so I hope they pull it off. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Terrell Thomas @TerrellThomas24

Favorite team?
“Los Angeles Lakers”

Do you call Kobe the Black Mamba?
“Ah no, I call him Kobe MF Bryant, sorry kids it’s what I say on twitter.”

I know DeMar Derozan went to USC just like you did, have any favorites/ friends in the league who went there as well?
“Yea Nick young (Clippers), Taj Gibson (Bulls) , and Gabe Pruitt (played for Celtics)”

If you could be Kobe for 1 day what would you do?
“I’d take his helicopter to practice every single day”

Fisher now plays for OKC, do you miss him?
“I don’t miss him because his time has run out, but he was a great player for us over the years and his leadership is something you can’t replace.”

Has the lockout affected this season in your opinion?
“I don’t think it affects basketball like it affects football. The practices we have with our teams aren’t the same. You can’t play football year round. Basketball you can play year round. You can go in the gym and practice drills and layups. It didn’t affect their ability to play or be around their teammates if they wanted to. So not as much as it affected us.”

I saw you at a Knicks game recently, when Mike Woodson was appointed interim coach. Are you a Knickerbeliever?
“No, because I’m a Laker fan. They have the talent, but everybody wants to be the star. They have good D, but I think they need to find the right players to gel with on the floor. I like Mike Woodson and definitely think that he is a great coach for them going forward.”

Who wins it all?
“It’s hard right now because the playoffs aren’t the same. A lot of teams are getting blown out, we’ll see in the 2nd round. It’s all about matchups. Who comes out of the east and the west. Lakers or San Antonio to the finals is my pick. Lakers are 7 footers and now we have a point guard that can penetrate. And as long as they put Lebron in the 4th then we’ll be good against the Heat since they’ll probably take the East”

Haha good one. Big thanks to Dave and Terrell for being the 1st to give some of their views to Heels to Hoops!!!

Where did this hoops obsession come from?

by

Where did this obsession with hoops come from?

You have two people to thank for my rabid “hoops-ism.” My older brother Daniel, and Chris Mannix, a writer at Sports Illustrated definitely got me hooked.

While growing up, my brother never let me watch basketball with him. I was the typical annoying little sister who only liked certain things that didn’t fit others tastes like the Cavs (because of LeBron) and the Knicks (because Marbury was from Coney Island – as am I). I probably wouldn’t have watched with me either. As soon as I moved out I was FREE!! Free to follow all the teams I pleased. Mwahahaha !

And then there’s Chris Mannix. Out of the blue he hit me up one day with, “You should check out the OKC Thunder.”

I’m thinking Oklahoma? Como se what??? But when I sat down and watched one of their games, I became hooked. Yes, because of the talent; but more so because these cats were all in my age range.

I have to say I love the Spurs, but I’d rather watch players who I can relate to. No crutches. Shortly after, Mannix persuaded me to get NBA League Pass and from then on I was locked in. Now you can be sure that by inbox is occasionally filled with updates from Mannix, Arash Markazi, a former SI writer who is now at ESPN, and anyone else I know who loves to torment me when my teams lose. Thanks guys.

Who knows… Maybe I’ll surprise you and post some interviews with some players, writers, and staffers for Heels to Hoops in the future.

Stay tuned…

The Heels Part…

by

Since the age of 15, I’ve thrown on stilettos and made love to flashing lights. You know what I mean… the modeling kind of love.

Sometimes I never believe my life. I’m only 21 and so fortunate. I’m so glad that I have constant reminders around me that it is real and I am very blessed.

If you really want to know me, know that I prefer to throw on a pair of Jordans instead of getting puss filled blisters from shoes that feel good for only about 5 seconds and transform me into an Amazon woman. I choose comfort over Jumanji feet ANY DAY.

……But don’t get it twisted, I love a 7 inch pump!!!!

I travel a lot, so I plan to use this blog as a way to give a glimpse of where I am and what I’m doing. I figure if you want to hear about my “new” hoops knowledge you need insight to who you’re talking to.

Lights….. Camera….. Action………….. Barea being fouled like Bynum was in the Hunger Games arena…

This is going to be fun.

The 2011-2012 Basketball Season

by

GOSH, where do I begin? First, let’s define the word “Lockout” in Damaris terms- BOREDOM.

I actually had no excuse not to leave my house during the owner-vs-athlete face-off. Derek Fisher became a target on the dart board in my brain, and Sports Center became the same stuff you get during the regular 5 o’clock local news. Thank God all bad things come to an end at some point.

66 games. That was the outcome. 66 short, brutal, injury prone games.

Let’s see how fast I can sum this season up? Rubio, Love, Lin, silent Spurs, bad back Rose, mighty mouse John Lucas III, Blake I break your backboard Griffin, Oklahoma City bring your Umbrella because we can’t stop Thunder, New York little engine that could Knicks, Toronto I’m gonna wear camouflage and look like Jurassic Park without even trying to Raptors, and Metta World can’t keep my elbows in to stop the Peace.

I think that’ll do it.

Yes, my League Pass subscription got a LOT of use this season. Why? Because, there was a game scheduled like every 5 seconds. I felt bad for the players at one point. I know how hard it is doing back-to-back photo shoots in different states, but back-to-back to bunion-to-butt crack games in the NBA because of a tighter time schedule? I’ll pass.

And the injuries this year were ridiculous on so many levels. One minute we’re screaming Melo! The next we were talking about which suit he’d wear to the game. Injuries hit everyone Amare… then Melo again… back to Amare… and Rubio… and Lin… and Rose… and Bryant… and Wade…and….well you get my point.

But I’m glad that’s over and the Playoffs are here!!!! If you follow me on twitter you know that my favorite teams are the Knicks, Bulls and Thunder. Yes, I rep 3 teams… don’t like it? Call David Stern.

I will soon be overseas on a crazy once in a lifetime performance opportunity, so I might not have as much time to write everyday as I would like. I will surely try my best to keep you guys updated on my sports thoughts and definitely later this summer with the London Olympics when I get back.

Let’s play ball.
